Roughly 600 million people become sick after consuming contaminated food and 420,000 people die every year from a food-borne sickness. Sadly, the most vulnerable amongst these numbers are children under the age of 5.
One of the major causes is cross-contamination and a lack of food safety. It is more important now than ever, to ensure what we are feeding our families is safe and won’t make them sick. Therefore, this article will show you how to prevent cross-contamination from occurring in your kitchen and how to keep your families safe.
Cross-contamination occurs when bacteria or other microorganisms are transferred from one substance to another.
Our Top 5 tips for Avoiding Cross-Contamination in the Kitchen are:
1. To thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water before you start cooking and also after touching raw eggs & meat, or other surfaces that could possibly be contaminated.

2. When storing raw meat, fish or poultry, please ensure you store these foods in an airtight container or plastic bag, to avoid the juices from leaking out onto other foods in your fridge.

3. Before you start prepping your food, be sure to wash your bench-top and all utensils you are going to use with hot soapy water.

4. Avoid touching your mobile phone while cooking, as this is an easy way for bacteria to spread from your phone into the food you are preparing and vice versa.

5. Our final tip is one of the most important, as it is the most common way for cross-contamination to occur. Please be sure to use separate chopping boards and knives for meat, vegetables and ready-made food.
