Self-love has started to become a more popular topic and is being encouraged and promoted in many different parts of the world. So you may be wondering what actually is self-love? Well, we are glad you asked. Self-love may look and feel different to everyone, but essentially self-love can be found through; self-awareness, self-acceptance, self-appreciation, acts of self-care and self-management.
The following, are some of the things we like to do to encourage self-love:
Take 30 minutes each day to do something you truly love, without your significant other. Even though we love our partners very much and want to spend all of our time with them, we all still need to have our own space and time. This is super important because it gives you the time to explore your individuality and creativity. Maybe you enjoy painting or casual pilates with a friend, or taking your dog for a walk. It doesn't matter what it is, as long as it is something you love and are passionate about. Try to do something out of the house; to breath fresh air, get some vitamin D and a change of scenery.
Fuel your body with nourishing foods. Did you know the food we eat plays a big a role in how we feel? It makes sense, if you eat junk you're going to feel like junk. Whereas, if you fuel your body with healthy foods that contain; fibre, protein, vitamins, minerals, water and carbohydrates, you are going to feel much better inside. We personally don't follow a strict diet and we still do enjoy the occasional sweet and some 'bad foods', but we like to follow the saying 'everything in moderation'. If you are interested in knowing more about what your body needs we suggest you visit a qualified dietician.
Limit the amount of time you spend in front of a screen and on social media. We know this is a hard one to do, especially if you have a job where you are using the computer each day. Some things we like to do are; taking regular breaks from looking at the screen so we don't strain our eyes and become tired, setting aside 45 mins before bed to read a book and not look at our phones or computers and taking a break from social media every second weekend. You'd be surprised at how relaxed you feel after your social media detox.
Try to get a good nights sleep. Sleep plays a vital role in our overall health and mental well-being. Sleep allows the body to repair and get energised for another day. See the photo below for some tips on how to get a better night's sleep.
Spend time with people who build you up and make you laugh, not people who tear you down. Motivational Speaker and overall legend Tony Robbins believes in the law of attraction and quotes, 'Get rid of negative people who bring you down. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, lend you knowledge and help you learn from your mistakes. Raise your standards for your inner circle.'
Don't take yourself too seriously and learn to laugh at yourself. There is a great children's parable called, 'Who Moved My Cheese' by Spencer Johnson and this simple yet spectacular book teaches many life lessons that are super important and basic. One of the lessons, is to not take yourself so seriously and learn to laugh at yourself. Once you learn how to do this your life will become much easier, because you won't be putting so much pressure on yourself to be a certain way and instead you will learn to have more fun with yourself and also those around you.
Overall, there are many ways to show yourself self-love and they all start with you. So take some time for yourself and learn what makes you happy, so you can love what you do and love who you are becoming.
Some reasons why you should choose to love yourself:
Reason 1. Reduces stress and anxiety: When you choose to love yourself, you let go of any fears you might have about yourself and thus feel more relaxed and less anxious. You don't put so much pressure on yourself and you learn to accept who you are and you focus on what you have achieved, as opposed to who you aren't and what you have not achieved.
Reason 2. Confidence Booster: Your confidence goes through the roof when you perform acts of self-care and give your body & mind the love it deserves. The Law of Attraction says, that when you believe & are confident in who you are, you will attract the love you both need and desire.
Reason 3. Increases Self-Satisfaction and Gratitude: When you love yourself and practise acts of self-love & care, you feel more satisfied and content with who you are. Increased levels of satisfaction helps you to feel more grateful for your life, the people around you, and also your personal achievements.
Reason 4. Increase Self-Motivation: Because you are more confident in yourself and you love & accept who you are, you feel more motivated to pursue your goals. You also have a clearer understanding of who you are and thus feel more motivated to know what it is you want to achieve.
Reason 5. Improvements in your Mental Health: It is clear that your overall mental health improves when you practise self-love, because you are choosing to attract happiness and positivity into your life, as opposed to sadness and negative thoughts. I am unsure of the particular science behind this, but we have seen our own mental health drastically improve throughout our journey of self-love.
I hope this blog post has motivated you to love yourself and practise more acts of self-care & love.
